That is what it is for: a sliding or pocket door that has to pass into a wall cavity, or any door where a projecting handle would be caught or knocked. It projects only 15/32", and screws are supplied. Cast metal rather than a stamped shell, so the edge does not deform when someone hooks a finger into it hard.
