A 4.5" x 4.5" steel spring hinge with concealed bearings. Unlike an ordinary butt hinge it is self-closing — the spring inside the barrel shuts the door behind whoever went through it, with no door closer mounted on the frame.

Why a spring hinge rather than a door closer

It does the closing job from inside the hinge, so nothing is bolted to the face of the door or the frame. On an apartment, hotel or condo door that has to self-close for code but should not look like a commercial entrance, that matters. The spring tension is adjustable, so the closing force gets set to the door at installation.

What to check before you order

How many you need. This is the important one. For a door between 70 lbs and 120 lbs, plan on one to three spring hinges — the heavier the door, the more of them it takes to close it reliably. They are usually mixed with ordinary butt hinges on the same door.

Fire doors. On a fire-rated door, at least two of the hinges must be spring hinges, in the center and bottom positions. This hinge is ANSI/BHMA A156.17 certified and UL/cUL listed as fire rated, so it holds up at inspection.

Grade 1 steel at 0.134" thick, heavy enough for apartment, hotel, condo and office doors.

Spring hinges can be used wherever a door must close automatically. But typically it is on a door that does not need customized speed and strength. Such customizations require a proper hydraulic Door Closer to control the whole experience of opening, closing, speed, and secure latching of the door.

Two of the most common uses for spring hinges therefore are in homes and in lodging (additional common scenarios mentioned below).

In Homes Connected to a Garage: The door connecting a house to its garage should not be overlooked when it comes to safety.

It is common in building codes and safety regulations to require a self-closing and fire-rated door between the house and the garage. When closed properly with the help of a spring hinge, this door helps prevent the spread of fire and smoke, protecting both people and property.

Insurance companies may require that your home comply with fire and safety regulations, and failure to meet these standards could affect your coverage or premiums. It's best for homeowners to review their insurance policies, understand the requirements related to safety features, and ensure that their property meets these standards.

In Guest Rooms at Hotels and Motels: Another very common place to use spring hinges are the guest rooms at hotels and motels.

Since the door to a hotel room serves only the guests in that room, it does not need the customized opening and closing features that a hydraulic Door Closer provides for doors in more public spaces.

However, for privacy and security reasons, the guest room doors do need to at least close automatically.

That’s why spring hinges are a popular choice for hotel and motel guest rooms: they get the job done, they often meet fire codes, and yet they can be installed seamlessly without having to add a full door closer to the frame.

Fire Doors: use 2 spring hinges on fire doors, placing hinges in the center and bottom location.

  • All Other Scenarios:
  • Doors up to 70lbs, 1 spring hinge with 2 ball bearing hinges. Spring hinge in center locations
  • Doors up to 90lbs, 2 spring hinges with 1 ball bearing hinge. Spring hinge in center and bottom locations
  • Doors up to 120lbs, 3 spring hinges in top, center, and bottom locations

  • (1) One solid steel hinge
  • (8) Eight Machine screws for metal doors
  • (8) Eight Wood screws for wooden doors
