Door Closer Installation Instructions

Which closer are you installing?
Step 1Is my door left or right handed?
Handing decides which face of the drilling template you use and how the arm is set. Get it wrong and nothing will line up, so do this first and write the answer down.
- Stand on the side of the door that it swings away from you. That is the push side.
- Look at where the hinges are.
- Hinges on your left → left-handed door. Hinges on your right → right-handed door.
Use that one answer for all three mounting methods. Some diagrams are drawn from the pull side and some from the push side, which is why handing can seem to flip between sections. It does not.
Your drilling template is double-sided — the reverse face is the left-handed side. The standard and parallel arm templates are mirror images of each other. That is correct, not a misprint.
