It is the hinge for an interior or entry door where the hardware is meant to be looked at as well as used.

Why solid brass, and why ball bearings

Solid brass means the color runs through the metal rather than sitting on top of it. A plated hinge that gets scuffed shows the base metal underneath; this one does not, which is why it still looks right years later on a door people touch every day.

The ball bearings sit in the knuckles and carry the door's weight, so the barrel is not grinding against itself every time the door swings. That is what keeps the action smooth and quiet as the hinge ages.

What to check before you order

The size. This is the 5" x 5" hinge.
