A drop plate is a flat bracket that bolts to the frame and gives the closer body somewhere to sit when the frame face on its own is too narrow, or when a stop or trim gets in the way of mounting straight to the head.

Buy it when the closer will not sit flat against the frame as it is. Check two things before ordering: that you have the LH816 and not another model, and that you are doing a standard installation — drop plates are not interchangeable between mounting styles.
